October Movies for All Hallows Eve – Part Deux

I tried again. Like last year – I’ve always been a little envious of people who watch like 31 scary movies (or more!) during the month of October. I’ve never been able to hit the full 31. There’s always baseball or football or regular TV or soccer or dance classes and such. But this October, I did my best. Not quite as good as last year – I only hit 20 instead of 27 last year. I did watch a few series which took a lot of time (Monster: The Ed Gein Story was…a lot lol). But if you are looking for a movie to watch tonight after all the trick-or-treating is complete, here is the list of the creepy, scary, disgusting and/or classic horror and horror-adjacent movies I have seen this month. A few of these (The Substance, Weapons, and Longlegs in particular) are ones I’m truly bummed I didn’t get to see in theaters. I planned to do a full write-up on each of them, but let’s be honest. that ain’t happening and there’s Reese’s to be dad-taxed so here it is!

 MovieStreaming ServiceScore (Out of 10)Notes
1It FeedsHulu6Relied a little too much on jump scares. Entitiy/Demon looked very good. Leads were great. Hulu has got to fix their sound quality.
2Trick ‘r TreatHBO Max9.75Yearly watch. Almost perfect.
3Until DawnNetflix7.5Very much felt like a video game. Which it’s based on…so that’s good. Good fun. Well acted.
4The WomanAmazon Prime4.5Outside of Pollyanna McIntosh’s performance, this was just torture porn. They tried to have a good feminist message, but it fell flat
5Bring Her BackHBO Max9.5Dude, Sally Hawkins is so good.  Philippou brothers follow up is even better Talk To Me, which I loved
6Final Destination: BloodlinesHBO Max9.5Surprisingly good. Need to rewatch all of them but it may be my favorite in the series.
7Tucker & Dale vs EvilDisney +10Watch this as much as possible. It’s just so good and a perfect send up of the genre as a whole.
8The InvitationHulu6.5Forgot I had already watched this til I was like halfway through the movie lol. It’s a perfectly fine vampire story.
9M3GAN 2.0Peacock8Maybe not as much on the horror elements as the first movie, but still very fun and M3GAN herself is still extraordinarily funny.
10Smile 2Paramount +8.5Great opening scene. A few very funny lines, which was unexpected. Didn’t think it was necessary but maybe liked it more than the 1st movie
11ViciousParamount +4 or 9 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Honestly cannot decide if I loved this movie or not at all. The sound design is junk, but overall a good examination of mental illness and self-acceptance. I will say Dakota Fanning elevates this massively.
12NosferatuAmazon Prime9Still very bummed I didn’t see this in thaters. Beautiful. Every scene that Lily Rose-Depp is in was elevated by her acting.
13Mouseboat MassaceAmazon Prime5Not as campy as I was hoping for. A warning for what happens when IP prtections run out lol. Not as good as anything in the Poohniverse.
14The Hand The Rocks the CradleHulu5ishSo many of my favorite actors but I don’t know if this retelling was necessary at all. Good acting. The husband is the worst character by a mile.
15The SubstanceHBO Max9.75, possible 10Man, this movie is as close to perfect as it gets for me. Demi Moore should have won every award. Perfect body horror.
16WeaponsHBO MaxSame as The SubstanceReal bummed out that I didn’t see this one in theaters. More than one person told me this may be my favorite movie of the year. Between this and Sinners. Watching The Substance and Weapons back to back was great.
17Peter Pan’s Neverland NightmarePeacock53rd entry in the Twisted Childhood Univers (The Poohniverse). Look, these movies aren’t good, but I’m so glad they exist.
18I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)Netflix7.5Fully unnecessary but a lot of fun. Better than it should be. Also as it turns out, still crushing on my first Hollywood crush so I’ve got that going me.
19Death of a UnicornHBO Max7.5Fun all the way throughout. The unicorns are legit scary looking but where they come from is beautiful. The whole cast is good and very funny
20LonglegsHulu8I loved it, but can totally understand how this movie is very uneven in terms of reviews. Truly felt uneasy for the whole run.

Happy Halloween everybody! I hope you all got more treats than tricks!

October Movies for All Hallows’ Eve

I’ve always been a little envious of people who watch like 31 scary movies (or more!) during the month of October. I’ve never been able to hit the full 31. There’s always baseball or football or regular TV or dance classes and such. But this October, I did my best. Came up just a bit short – I hit 27 films. Well, 26 and a half to be honest. But if you are looking for a movie to watch tonight after all the trick-or-treating is complete, here is the list of the creepy, scary, disgusting and/or classic horror and horror-adjacent movies I have seen this month. I planned to do a full write-up on each of them, but there’s Reese’s to be gotten and the five year old (me) is excited to get started so I just put a little note about how I felt about each of them out to the side.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Our Champion

So during our bracket tournament last year we were in the first real, scary part of Coronavirus lockdowns. I wanted to use this dumb bracket as a way to keep our minds busy and focused on something positive and comforting even if it truly is trivial in nature. This year we entered this tournament with hope of beating this thing finally with mass vaccinations happening as we speak. While we still are fighting this battle, it was nice to have something to distract me and I hope it was for all of you as well. Thank you again everyone for taking time to vote on these silly things. I really do look forward to this every single year and hope you do too. Enough with the my blabbering, let’s get to the good stuff!

Our Championship Round came down to a 1 seed and a 2 seed I think most had picked to win the whole thing. Like I said, these two movies were two of maybe four or five that I believed had a chance to win the whole thing. Time to find out how the Championship Round fared. Remember all “scores” are in percentages.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Championship

Well guys, here we are. After knocking down 64 of our favorite holiday movies down to the final two we have landed on a Championship game that I think a lot of us could have seen coming. Our tournament this year, with the exception of a couple of massive underdogs pushing into the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, went pretty much as expected.

Just like every year, I like to make picks like I’m in an office pool before March Madness. For the most part the Final 4 was not that much of a surprise as two 1 seeds, a 2 seed, and a very strong 4 seed made it in. Y’all ended up with the same Elite 8 and Final 4 as I picked in my bracket before we started. After this great run, let’s see how the winners of each region fared in the Final Four and who will face off in the Championship!

The Championship Round voting begins now and will end Wednesday April 7 at 5pm Central. Championship winner will be announced on Thursday. I can’t believe we are already almost through this year!

But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Final 4

Well y’all, we did it! Here we are. We have our Regional Champions and are ready to move on to the Final 4! The Elite 8 saw two close games (one of which could have gone either way the entire time) and two blowouts. We enter the Final 4 with four teams that I thought were the biggest contenders regardless of how someone seeded one of them. I regret nothing. But enough with my rambling…on to the scores!

The Final 4 voting begins now and voting will end Sunday April 4 at 5pm Central. Championship round begins on Monday. I can’t believe we are already almost through this year!

But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Elite 8

Ok, so last year’s Sweet 16 was the closest rounds of voting we have ever had. This year’s group of 16 on the other hand was full of blowouts with the exception of one extremely close game. That one, which we will get to momentarily was back and forth or tied every time I checked. Neither movie ever got more than a 2 vote lead.

The Regional Finals begins now and voting will end Wednesday, March 31 at 5pm Central. Our Final 4 and regional winners will be announced and start the ultimate battle for Holiday movie supremacy on April Fools Day. Good luck with making up your mind on some of these.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Sweet 16

The Round of 32 went by with bunch of votes, a few legitimate surprises, and our first 1 seed going down. I am absolutely gobsmacked by this #1 falling. Not even this early, just going down in general. Starting with the Sweet 16 this week the choices get more and more difficult. I’m really going to have to sit with some of these decisions to be honest.

The Regional Semifinals begins now and voting will end Sunday, March 28 at 5pm Central. Good luck with making up your mind on some of these.

March Madness: Holiday Movies – Round of 32

Alright y’all, that was very exciting! For the most part things went down as expected. There were a couple of close games and one match-up that came down to Mrs. Clumsy Optimist pulling in to fulfill her duty as official bracket game tie-breaker for the first time in years. (She doesn’t vote unless there is a tie).

The seeding this year, although completely and wholly biased as I went along, seems to have been just about right. The Animated Region went completely scratch and the Classic Region also went scratch with the exception of an 8/9 match-up that always seems like it can go either way. We basically only had two real upsets, with an 11 seed in the Modern Region and a VERY strong 13 seed in the Non-Typical Region making it through.

Unexplained Rankings – Horror Flicks

I know it’s been 8 months since I have put anything on this site, but I got lazy, and then there was a hurricane, and then I got forgetful. But I’m back, baby! It’s almost time for the 3rd annual bracket to kick off next week. I am super excited and hope you all are as well. To get back into the swing of writering, I’m just going to rank things sometimes. No reasoning beyond “This is a thing I like more than this other thing”. Up first – horror movies.   Continue reading “Unexplained Rankings – Horror Flicks”

March Movie Madness – Our Champion

What an incredible four weeks of competition. I can’t say it enough guys, this is the most fun I have on this site every year and I cannot thank you all for voting time and again. I think this is something that can grow into a really enjoyable tradition. Ok, enough wasting your time, on to our champ!

These were two of the favorites to take it all from the beginning. How did our Championship round fare? Remember all “scores” are in percentage. Continue reading “March Movie Madness – Our Champion”
