What an incredible four weeks of competition. I can’t say it enough guys, this is the most fun I have on this site every year and I cannot thank you all for voting time and again. I think this is something that can grow into a really enjoyable tradition. Ok, enough wasting your time, on to our champ!
These were two of the favorites to take it all from the beginning. How did our Championship round fare? Remember all “scores” are in percentage.
Championship
After a really noncompetitive Sweet 16, Elite 8, and half of our Final Four, it was anyone’s guess how the final would play out.
Rudy had a pretty tough draw, but the #1 overall seed took out some great movies in The Waterboy, Draft Day, Friday Night Lights, and Remember the Titans to take the Football Region. After making it’s way fairly easily into the Final Four, Rudy needed a 1 vote win over powerhouse (and yes, I’ve heard you – and agree!! – criminally underseeded) 13 seed Space Jam to get to the final match-up.
Our other contender, on the other hand, completely destroyed every movie that they came up against. The closest game The Sandlot faced was a 77-23 drubbing of The Natural in the 2nd round. Our scrappy baseball movie beat out some amazing flicks in Moneyball, The Natural, a 100-0 beat down of #1 seed Bull Durham, and Major League to win the Baseball Region. An easy 83-17 victory over a beloved 11 seed Cool Runnings in the Final Four put our strongest competitor in the championship game.
I kept an eye on this championship game all weekend and it was back and forth every time I checked. By my count, there were 5 lead changes and neither competitor was ever up by more than 2 votes. In the end, the #1 seed Rudy found our tough #12 seed The Sandlot to be too much. The boys from the lot captured the championship via a 1 vote win 53-47. Don’t ever think your vote doesn’t count!
Thank you all again for taking time to vote in this tournament. I hope this thing was as fun for you as it was for me. We’ll have to do it again next year! I’m looking for ideas for next year’s bracket and if you have any suggestions, feel free to get in touch with me on Facebook or Twitter.
After knocking 64 acts down to a final Champion, our completed bracket looks like this:
You didn’t think The Sandlot could pull it off? You’re killing me, Smalls!
