Everyone knows that resolutions are for busters. But seeing how we are all busters, we continue to make them every year and then proceed to lose track of them pretty soon into the new year. I’ve fallen into the resolution pit once again. I had two main resolutions for this year. Write at least two spots—hopefully more— on this page each month (fail.) and, like the rest of the free world, lose some weight. Continue reading “Resolutions Schmesolutions”

Looking Back on 2015
I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I want this space to be. It’s going to be a little bit of personal anecdotes and some sharing pieces. I’ve been bad about remembering to write here often enough and with the new year starting this weekend my hope is to write at least two pieces every month. Procrastination has always been a huge issue for me – I wrote my senior thesis in college the night before it was due. Maybe TCO will be a way for me to work on that.
Every time we are coming back from a trip or come up on an anniversary, my wife asks me to name my favorite parts of the event/year/trip. I can always count on a quick smile and a “What were your favorite parts of _____?” With the new year upon us I thought it would be fun to look back at the year. With that, I give you a few of my entertainment favorites.
Turkey Day

Happy Thanksgiving! There aren’t a whole lot of days better than Thanksgiving, are there? Food, family, and football. All day football.
I still remember my first Thanksgiving as a married man. Six years ago I was working security at Target. This holiday has a much different meaning when you work in retail. Thanksgiving day is really just a pause in the middle of the two busiest days of the year. Continue reading “Turkey Day”
I watched last night’s Donald Trump SNL so you don’t have to
Ok. That was rough. I’m one of the few people left that still enjoys Saturday Night Live almost every weekend. For years I have watched on Saturday night and sped through the DVR with my wife on Sunday mornings , showing her the better sketches of the week. It’s a fun tradition for us. That tradition died this morning. There wasn’t really a lot for me to show her. This was by far the worst episode of the season and in recent memory. Let’s get to it. It is what it is
Everyone who knew my brother knew that he was not the kind of person to just pass through your life. He touched everyone he met. Connor was one of the best people I’ve ever met – you just got the feeling that he cared deeply for everyone he spent time with. He was also stronger than I could ever hope to be and whether he knew it or not, he taught me how to be a man.
We need to talk about how we talk about suicide
When I first read this opinion piece on the Dallas Morning News by Sharon Grigsby, as a mental health professional, I was angry. It lacked empathy, was unprofessional, and unethical. Here is a professional journalist — the Deputy editorial page editor and writer for the DMN since 1980 according to her bio page – completely missing the mark in a most basic and dangerous way. Like I said, I was angry at first but the more I thought about it the more it shows that when it comes to mental health awareness in this country, we are not doing enough to advance our cause.
