Well our first round of voting was not nearly as chaotic as the first weekend of the real NCAA tournament but we did have a few underdogs prevail. March Madness is upon us, my friends!
I have to apologize up front for the technical issues we had with the Round of 64 post. I really think the problem came down to there just being too many videos on one page. This should not be an issue going forward but please let me know if these pages crash and I’ll break the regions down like I did last week.
The seeding this year, while again, completely and wholly biased as I went along seems to have been somewhat close to right. We only had one 4-seed go down and all other 1-4 seeds sailed through to the second round. We had one match-up end up in the ever elusive 100-0 victory and one semi-surprising match-up that came down to one vote. We had a couple of surprising votes to me but that’s the fun thing about these brackets, finding out how wrong I am about things!
The second round begins now and voting will end Wednesday, March 22 at 5pm Central. There are already a few damn near impossible choices to be made. Good luck!
But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.
Round of 64
Restaurants Region
(1) McDonald’s – “I’m Lovin’ It” vs (16) Crossfire – “Crossfire!”
The 16 seed “Crossfire” here was a little gift to me from me. I love this mess of a rock song so much. It jumped out to a surprising early lead but the blue blood 1 seed “I’m Lovin’ It” found their footing and cruised to a 68-32 win.
(2) Chili’s – “I Want My Baby Back” vs (15) My Buddy – “My Buddy”
2 seed, Chili’s “I Want My Baby Back” is probably one of the first ads that I can remember almost fully taking over the national zeitgeist. It dispatched “My Buddy” pretty handily by a final of 77-23.
(3) Mentos – “The Fresh Maker” vs (14) Lite-Brite – “Lite-Brite, Turn on the Magic of Colored Lights…”
Mentos turned the Lites out on this one by a final of 68-32.
(4) Meow Mix – “Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow” vs (13) McDonald’s – “Give Me That Filet-o-Fish. Give Me That Fish.”
Cat food vs fish sandwiches. The way it should be. The 13 seed is a really funny commercial but stood no chance against Meow Mix as they win 84-16.
(5) The Clapper – “Clap On, Clap Off” vs (12) Slinky – “Everyone Knows it’s Slinky”
Our big shocker in this region saw what I though could be a dark horse in 5 seed “Clap On, Clap Off” fall to 12 seed Slinky by a final of 63-37. Not even close. These 5/12 match-ups are always worth watching!
(6) Big Mac – “Two All-Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickles, Onions, On a Sesame Seed Bun” vs (11) Subway – “Five Dollar Footlong”
Another upset found it’s way to the board as 11 seed earworm “Five Dollar Footlong” took out the way too wordy 6 seed “Two All-Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickles, Onions, On a Sesame Seed Bun” 65-35. My typing fingers thank you for this one.
(7) Burger King: “Hold the Pickles, Hold the Lettuce…Have it Your Way” vs (10) Burger King New Jingle – “At BK”
The first vote that I sort of disagree with found the old BK ad knocking out the new guy on the block as “Hold the Pickles, Hold the Lettuce” wins 55-45. This one came down to 3 votes total! It’s probably the right call because there is no new ad without the OG, but the new one is just so damn catchy.
(8) Double Mint Gum – “Double Your Pleasure” vs (9) Big Red – “Kiss a Little Longer”
Our Restaurants Region’s final game was a battle of chewing gum ads. I had no idea how to vote on this one. Y’all had the same issue it seems like as this match-up came down to 3 votes as well as Double Mint Gum ekes out a 55-45 win over Big Red.
Companies Region
(1) Toys ‘R’ Us – “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” vs (16) Stanley Steemer – “Makes Your Home Cleaner”
The Companies Region got started off with an absolute beatdown as 1 seed “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” got all but 1 vote as they take down Stanley Steemer 97-3.
(2) JG Wentworth – “8-7-7 Cash Now” vs (15) Ace – “Ace is the Place”
Our 2 seed JG Wentworth took down the friendly hardware folks over at Ace by a final of 70-30.
(3) Freecreditreport.com – “F-R-E-E, That Spells Free” vs (14) Kars4Kids – “1-8-7-7 Kars4Kids”
In what may be a match-up of two of the most infectious jingles of all time, our 3 seed continued the relatively easy going nature of our higher seeds as they took out the Kars4Kids Kids 86-14.
(4) Chia Pet – “Chi-chi-chi-Chia” vs (13) Army – “Be All That You Can Be”
The 4 seed found a bit more of a struggle as the Army gave Chia all they could handle but came up short with the 4 seed moving on 63-37.
(5) Farmers – “We Are Farmers” vs (12) Liberty Mutual – “Liberty, Liberty, Liberty”
A battle of the insurance jingles that I thought would be close ended up anything but as the 5 seed Farmers takes out 12 seed Liberty Mutual by a final of 83-17.
(6) Kay Jewelers – “Every Kiss Begins with Kay” vs (11) Nair – “Who Wears Short Shorts?”
This region only had one upset and this was the one as a very strong 11 seed “Who Wears Short Shorts?” fairly easily knocks off the 6 seed Kay Jewelers 77-23.
(7) Wayfair – “Wayfair, You’ve Got Just What I Need” vs (10) Ross – “I Got It at Ross”
The 10 seed here was one of Mrs. Clumsy Optimist’s favorite childhood jingle. “I Got It at Ross” put up a good fight but was, unfortunately for her, dispatched by 7 seed Wayfair by a final of 60-40.
(8) State Farm – “Like a Good Neighbor” vs (9) Nationwide – “On Your Side”
Our other battle of insurance company jingles saw the 8 seed State Farm send 9 seed Nationwide packing via a 70-30 win.
Drinks Region
(1) Folgers – “The Best Part of Waking Up” vs (16) Mennan – “By Mennan”
Like the Companies Region, the Drinks Region got started off with an absolute beatdown as the 1 seed also got all but one vote, destroying 16 seed “By Mennan” 97-3.
(2) Huggies Pull-Ups- “I’m a Big Kid Now” vs (15) Pepsi – “Have a Pepsi Day”
I think this 2 seed is going to be a tough out. The 15 seed “Have a Pepsi Day” found this out the hard way as they also only pulled one vote, falling to “I’m a Big Kid Now 97-3.
(3) Coca-Cola – “I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing” vs (14) Gilette – “The Best a Man Can Get”
The VERY 70’s “I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing” got a little bit more pushback than expected from the 14 seed Gillette but the 3 seed comes out victorious 76-24.
(4) Cotton – “The Fabric of Our Lives” vs (13) Dr Pepper – “Wouldn’t You Like to be a Pepper Too?”
This one. There is always at least one match-up that completely catches me off guard. Our lone 4 seed to go down in the first round saw “The Fabric of Our Lives” fall to 13 seed Dr. Pepper 62-38.
In a lot of the research I had done before these rankings, many ad companies point to Cotton’s jingle as one of the all-time greats and something to aspire to. Dr. Pepper said “I don’t care about your little acclaim, I got 23 flavors of whoop ass for ya.”
(5) Band-Aid – “I am Stuck On Band-Aid Brand, ‘Cause Band-Aid’s Stuck On Me” vs (12) Budweiser – “This Bud’s For You”
We got back to our regularly scheduled programming as 5 seed Band-Aid took out a strong 12 seed “This Bud’s For You” 90-10. Just a slaughter. Good thing they got those Band-Aid’s hanging around.
(6) Bud Light – “Real Men of Genius” vs (11) Alka-Seltzer – “Plop Plop Fizz Fizz”
6 seed “Real Men of Genius” is my dark horse to win the whole tournament from outside the 1-4 seeds. It’s so good. They got off to a good start with a win over 11 seed Alka-Seltzer 72-28.
(7) Ricola – “Ricolaaa!” vs (10) Coca-Cola – It’s The Real Thing”
Ricola handled Coke’s “It’s the Real Thing” pretty easily 86-14.
(8) Maybelline – “Maybe She’s Born With It” vs (9) Fanta – “Wanta Fanta?”
Our Foods Region finished off with the 9 seed “Wanta Fanta?” pushing out 8 seed Maybelline by a final of 58-42. The 8/9 match-ups are usually so close and fun! Usually – more on that later.
Foods Region
(1) Kit Kat – “Give Me a Break” vs (16) Rice-a-roni – “The San Fransisco Treat”
Our final region saw another 1 seed get a little early push back as Kit Kat moves on after 16 seed Rice-a-roni came up quite short of a severe upset. Final here was 79-21.
(2) Oscar Meyer – “I’d Love To Be An Oscar Meyer Weiner” vs (15) Bumble Bee Tuna – “I Love Bumble Bee Tuna”
Oscar Meyer has two jingles in this tournament. Their first entry, mammoth 2 seed “I’d Love To Be An Oscar Meyer Weiner” got our only blemish-free victory so far as they demolished 15 seed Bumble Bee Tuna 100-0!
(3) Pepto – “Nausea, Heartburn, Indigestion…” vs (14) Sara Lee – “Nobody Doesn’t Like Sara Lee”
3 seed Pepto took out probably the most misheard jingle lyric in 14 seed “Nobody Doesn’t Like Sara Lee” by a final of 89-11.
(4) Spaghetti-O’s – “Uh-Oh! Spaghetti-O’s!” vs (13) Ragu – “I Feel Like Chicken Tonight”
When I first looked up the commercial for this 13 seed I was mentally transported back to the early 90s. The good vibes didn’t last long as they were summarily disposed by 4 seed “Uh-Oh! Spaghetti-O’s!” 79-21.
(5) Klondike Bar – “What Would You Do?” vs (12) Almond Joy – “Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut”
Like I said earlier, you always gotta keep an eye on these 5/12 match-ups. 12 seed Almond Joy came up one vote short of starting a Cinderella run as 5 seed Klondike Bar got the 51-49 win.
(6) Green Giant – “Ho-Ho-Ho, Green Giant!” vs (11) Lucky Charms – “They’re Magically Delicious”
I struggled with where to rank the Green Giant jingle. It’s so short but also so perfect. The 11 seed Lucky Charms jingle got out to a super early lead and never looked back knocking off the higher seed by a final of 82-18.
(7) Tootsie Roll – “Whatever it is I Think I See” vs (10) Rice Krispies – “Snap! Crackle! Pop! Rice Krispies!”
These were actually two jingles I didn’t remember but definitely immediately came back quickly as the 10 seed rolls along via a 61-39 win over 7 seed Tootsie Roll.
(8) Oscar Meyer – “My Bologna Has a First Name” vs (9) Goldfish – “The Snack That Smiles Back”
Remember how I said these 8/9 match-ups are usually nail biters? Well, Oscar Meyer’s second entry into our Foods Region kept their hot streak going as they easily knocked off 9 seed Goldfish by a final of 89-11.
That leaves us with our bracket looking like this:

Alright everybody, let’s get to voting! See you guys on Thursday with our Sweet 16!
