March Madness: Disney Songs – Round of 32

Hoo boy. Y’all have definitely made some decisions in the opening round. A couple head scratchers for me for sure but I respect your wrong decisions. Lol. There were four or five games that came down to 1 or 2 votes in the last hour of voting and one match-up that came down to Mrs. Clumsy Optimist pulling in to fulfill her duty as official bracket game tie-breaker for the first time this year. (She doesn’t vote unless there is a tie).

The seeding this year, while again, completely and wholly biased as I went along seems to have been somewhat close to right. The Mickey Region saw 3 upsets, Minnie and Donald Regions almost went scratch, and the Goofy Region was…well…goofy. We saw our first 3 and 4 seeds go down and some Cinderella stories start to take shape.

The second round begins now and voting will end Wednesday, March 23 at 5pm Central. There are already a few damn near impossible choices to be made. Good luck!

But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.

MICKEY REGION

(1) “When You Wish Upon a Star” (Pinocchio) vs (16) “When She Loved Me / Jessie’s Song” (Toy Story 2)

Our first game set one of the most aspirational and beautiful songs in the Disney catalogue against one of it’s saddest. The 1 seed cruised to a 74-26 victory over 16 seed “Jessie’s Song”.

(2) “Be Our Guest” (Beauty and the Beast) vs (15) “Out There” (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Two seed “Be Our Guest” had no problems with the 15 seed, “Out There” as they just crushed the lovely Hunchback anthem by a final of 84-16.

(3) “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (Fantasia) vs (14) “Go the Distance” (Hercules)

Looking back on it, I’m not sure if “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” should have met the criteria for this bracket since it’s the only one without lyrics but again – my bracket: I do what I want. Surprisingly, it was a short lived problem as our first 3 seed fell to 14 seed “Go The Distance” by a final of 59-41.

(4) “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (The Lion King) vs (13) “Why Should I Worry” (Oliver & Company)

I had a feeling this one would be a slaughter. It was as the 4 seed moves on easily via a 87-13 victory over the kind of mean “Why Should I Worry”.

(5) “Under the Sea” (The Little Mermaid) vs (12) “Remember Me” (Coco)

“Remember Me” is a cry song. “Under the Sea” is a bop. The bop won this go around as our 5 seed moves on to the Round of 32 after a 72-28 win.

(6) “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” (Mary Poppins) vs (11) “You’re Welcome” (Moana)

Let me tell you how much action the CTRL+C function has gotten with our 6 seed here. It’s a bunch. In a somewhat surprising upset, our 11 seed “You’re Welcome” pulled out a last second 2 vote win 52-48. Don’t ever think your vote doesn’t count!

(7) “Someday My Prince Will Come (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) vs (10) “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” (Frozen)

In a battle of old vs new, the sisterly anthem, 10 seed “Do you Want to Build a Snowman?” came out swinging and just crushed the competition coming out on top of one of the OGs 88-12.

(8) “One Jump Ahead” (Aladdin) vs (9) “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” (Cinderella)

Our Mickey Region’s last game was back and forth all weekend but the 8 seed from Aladdin pushed ahead when it mattered, knocking off “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” by a final of 58-42.

MINNIE REGION

(1) “Beauty and the Beast” (Beauty and the Beast) vs (16) “Shiny” (Moana)

Minnie Region 1 seed also moves on fairly easily of a super fun “Shiny” via a 84-16 win.

(2) “Circle of Life” (The Lion King) vs (15) “The Gospel Truth” (Hercules)

“The Gospel Truth” is one of the most fun songs on our bracket. “You mean Hunkules?” Amazing. It stood absolutely no chance against our 2 seed as “Circle of Life” moves on after a 88-12 win.

(3) “Reflection” (Mulan) vs (14) “Baby Mine” (Dumbo)

I would argue the scene in which “Baby Mine” plays is one of the most heartbreaking things Disney has ever put on screen. 3 seed “Reflection” took it out by a final of 73-27.

(4) “How Far I’ll Go” (Moana) vs (13) “What’s This? (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

I love The Nightmare Before Christmas so much but I knew this song had almost no chance. In the end, “How Far I’ll Go” waltzed to victory 74-26.

(5) “Friend Like Me” (Aladdin) vs (12) “Almost There” (The Princess and the Frog)

People sleep on The Princess and the Frog so much but the music is top notch. That being said, “Almost There” drew a super tough first round win and fell to 5 seed “Friend Like Me” 84-16.

(6) “Heigh-Ho” (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) vs (11) “A Girl Worth Fighting For” (Mulan)

In another wickedly close matchup that wasn’t decided until the last hour of voting, our 11 seed pulls the upset over the dudes going to work by a final of 52-48.

(7) “Poor Unfortunate Souls” (The Little Mermaid) vs (10) “Just Around the Riverbend” (Pocahontas)

This was the one. Every time I checked on this matchup one or the other was up but never by more than 2 or 3 votes. In the end we had our first tie of the season and Mrs. Optimist broke the 50-50 final, casting her vote for the 7 seed “Poor Unfortunate Souls”.

(8) “An Unusual Prince/Once Upon a Dream” (Sleeping Beauty) vs (9) “A Spoonful of Sugar” (Mary Poppins)

The Minnie Region’s first round ends with a blowout as 9 seed “A Spoonful of Sugar” moves on by a final of 85-15.

DONALD REGION

(1) “Let It Go” (Frozen) vs (16) “Be Prepared” (The Lion King)

A lot of people told me this was the hardest region for them to figure out how to vote. Out 1 seed had more of punch than expected by 16 seed “Be Prepared” but ultimately held them off as “Let It Go” moves on 61-39.

(2) “Part of Your World” (The Little Mermaid) vs (15) “In a World of My Own” (Alice in Wonderland)

In what would end up being our biggest blowout of the Round of 64, 2 seed “Part of your World” ran through the 15 seed 97-3.

(3) “Hakuna Matata” (The Lion King) vs (14) “Zero to Hero” (Hercules)

“Zero To Hero” is such a good time. “Hakuna Matata” is as well. In this matchup the song from The Lion King moves on after a 85-15 victory.

(4) “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” (Toy Story) vs (13) “Friends on the Other Side” (The Princess and the Frog)

In a battle of friend songs “Friends on the Other Side” put up a decent fight but ultimately stood no chance against “You’ve got a Friend in Me”, falling by a final of 83-17.

(5) “Prince Ali” (Aladdin) vs (12) “Belle” (Beauty and the Beast)

“Belle” cracks me up every time I hear it. An entire town ripping on Belle: “Sure, she’s beautiful – but what a freakin’ weirdo. She READS?!” – everyone in town. Our 5 seed “Prince Ali” withstood everything the small provincial town could throw at them taking a late 2 vote victory 52-48.

(6) “Whistle While You Work” (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) vs (11) “Oo-De-Lally” (Robin Hood)

This is one that I disagree with the final. “Oo-De-Lally” is full on fire. In what came down to 1 vote, “Whistle While You Work” moves on by a final of 51-49.

(7) “Surface Pressure” (Encanto) vs (10) “The Bare Necessities” (The Jungle Book)

But this is the one. This is the new song that pulls at my heartstrings. “Surface Pressure” is an amazing piece of work. It went down in the first round to 10 seed “The Bare Necessities” by a final of 51-49. One vote. One person could have made the right call and we wouldn’t be here, but I’ll stand by you people. Even when you are wrong.

(8) “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” (Cinderella) vs (9) “Cruella De Vil” (101 Dalmatians)

This one was pretty difficult for me to pick. Both songs are pretty good grooves. It seems y’all had the same problem I did. At the end of the day, 8 seed “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” moves on after a 54-46 win.

GOOFY REGION

(1) “A Whole New World” (Aladdin) vs (16) “Two Worlds One Family” (Tarzan)

Our last region to get going started with what was destined to be a blowout as the 1 seed moves on via a 86-14 victory.

(2) “Into the Unknown” (Frozen II) vs (15) “Mother Knows Best” (Tangled)

I thought this game would end in a blowout as well but “Mother Knows Best” really put up a fight coming up just short of a massive upset. “Into the Unknown” hangs on and moves to the Round of 32 on the back of a 64-46 win.

(3) “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (Encanto) vs (14) “Un Poco Loco” (Coco)

It seems like ranking a brand new song this high is a stretch, but “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was literally the #1 song in America for over a month. The most popular song from Encanto held off “Un Poco Loco” for a 67-33 victory.

(4) “Eye to Eye (I 2 I)” (A Goofy Movie) vs (13) “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” (Mulan)

Here’s another one where I will stand against the final vote. 4 seed “I 2 I” could be played at any club today and people would lose their minds. But, y’all decided to go with Mulan again as “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” moves on after a 64-36 win. The song from our region’s host, Goofy, goes out in round 1.

(5) “You Can Fly” (Peter Pan) vs (12) “You’ll Be in My Heart” (Tarzan)

In an upset that I actually agree with all of you on, 12 seed “You’ll Be In My Heart” moves on to the Round of 32, taking out “You Can Fly” by a final of 61-39. Phil Collins went off the rails in all the best ways on that soundtrack, man.

(6) “Winnie The Pooh” (The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh) vs (11) “Colors of the Wind” (Pocahontas)

Our third straight upset in the Donald region saw 11 seed “Colors of the Wind” easily take out the ever sweet “Winnie the Pooh” by a final of 71-29.

(7) “Kiss the Girl” (The Little Mermaid) vs (10) “Bella Notte” (Lady and the Tramp)

I don’t really like “Bella Notte” very much. It seems we are all in agreement. 7 seed “Kiss the Girl” moves on after drubbing the 10 seed 92-8.

(8) “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” (The Lion King) vs (9) “I Wanna Be Like You” (The Jungle Book)

the last game of our first round was a battle of aspiration in the jungle. At the end of voting our 8 seed “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” moves on after winning 75-25 over 9 seed “I Wanna Be Like You”

That leaves us with our bracket looking like this:
