March Madness: Fictional Band’s Songs– Championship

Hey guys, we made it! We’re already through this great tournament. This has been a ton of fun and honestly one of the most exciting brackets we’ve ever done. We’ve had so many match-ups this go-round come down to the wire!

Just like every year, I like to make picks like I’m in an office pool before March Madness. For the second time in a row, the Final 4 was exactly what I picked. The only region I was unsure of was Cartoon/Kid and that was between 2 seed “Peaches”, which took the region, and 3 seed “I 2 I (Eye to Eye)”. After this great run, let’s see how the winners of each region fared in the Final Four and who will face off in the title game!

The Championship Round voting begins now and will end Wednesday April 10 at 5pm Central. Championship winner will be announced on Thursday. I can’t believe we are already almost through this year!

But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.

Semi-Final #1

(1) “Scotty Doesn’t Know” – Eurotrip vs (2) “Peaches” – The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Our Rockstar Region was the only one of our four regions that ended with the top seed representing. The 1 seed “Scotty Doesn’t Know” from Eurotrip had some tight matches but ultimately, the song we all knew had the best shot at taking the region won out. The Eurotrip anthem got shot out of a cannon with a full destruction of 16 seed “African Child (Trapped in Me)” – Get Him to the Greek 88-12. 8 seed “I’m So Humble” – Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping got fully humbled 85-15 in the Round of 32. In the Sweet 16, our biggest Cinderella, 12 seed “School of Rock (Teacher’s Pet)” – School of Rock, saw midnight come early by a final of 65-35. The Rockstar Regional Final was an all-timer as “Scotty Doesn’t Know got their biggest test from 2 seed “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” – O Brother, Where Art Thou? but ultimately the 1 seed won by a two vote margin of victory 54-46.

The Cartoon/Kid Region was a battle between the top three spots, I believe. There were some phenomenal songs in there, but I would have been shocked if someone made a Cinderella run from this region. In the end, our earworm of a 2 seed “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie sent all of the other songs in this region to an early Sleepytime. They got started by knocking out a song that didn’t quite fit our definitions in 15 seed “Technical Foul” – Eight Crazy Nights 82-18. The Round of 32 saw them take out a personal favorite in 7 seed “Sunny Side Up Summer” – The Bob’s Burgers Movie by a final of 79-21. Now that I think of it, “Peaches” is responsible for a few of my personal favorites falling to their doom, as in the Sweet 16 they beat 3 seed “I 2 I (Eye to Eye) – A Goofy Movie by two votes 56-44. The Cartoon/Kid Region came down to a classic 1/2 match-up. 1 seed “The Climb” – Hannah Montana: The Movie did their best but ultimately fell 69-31.

The first Semi-Final was a runaway in comparison to Semi-Final #2. And truly, this was a close one! As of Friday night, our Rockstar Region champion “Scotty Doesn’t Know” was up by 3 votes over Cartoon/Kid Region champ “”Peaches”. As Sunday night voting came to a close, our Rockstar Regional winner “Scotty Doesn’t Know” beats out Bowser and moves on to the Championship by a final of 57-43.

Semi-Final #2

(2) “Lose Yourself” – 8 Mile vs (3) “Smelly Cat” – Friends

In another region where I thought the 2 seed was actually probably the best song there, 8 Mile‘s “Lose Yourself” fought tooth and nail to win the Solo Region and get to the Final 4. They started off easy, beating down 15 seed “Love Me Sexy” – Semi-Pro 89-11. The Round of 32 saw them take out a beautiful 7 seed “Dracula’s Lament” – Forgetting Sarah Marshall by a final of 60-40. This would be the end of their easy street. The Sweet 16 found them end up in a tie with 3 seed “Grow Old With You” – The Wedding Singer 50-50 (!) which was broken by Mrs. Clumsy Optimist in favor of B-Rabbit. They followed that squeaker up by winning the Solo Region over 4 seed “I’m Just Ken” – Barbie by just one vote 52-48.

Our final region, the TV Region, went all the way to the Elite 8 before there was a lower seed beat a higher seed (and that was a 3 seed beating a 2 seed). The 3 seed “Smelly Cat” from Friends was able to take this region by storm thanks to the Millennial vote one would assume. They began the Round of 64 by taking down another classic show in 14 seed “Straight Outta Scranton” (Michael’s Rap) – The Office 74-26. They cruised to an easy victory over a fun 6 seed “Cop Cuties” – The Rookie in the second round 89-11. “Smelly Cat” got their biggest test in the Sweet 16 from 2 seed “Let’s Go To the Mall” – How I Met Your Mother but in the end moved on 60-40. Our 1 seed “Little Sebastian” – Parks & Recreation really and truly tried their best but could not overtake Friends love and fell to the 2 seed 64-46.

Our second Semi-Final was a super tight game. Every time I checked in either Solo Region representative “Lose Yourself” or TV Region winner “Smelly Cat” was up by one vote! With one hour to go in voting, I checked in on this one and it was a deat heat! The Solo Region champ “Lose Yourself” lobbed up a last second buzzer beater and takes out the Friends anthem by ONE VOTE! 52-48. So the last three rounds for the 8 Mile record have been won by tie-breaker, one vote and one vote. Living on the edge!

After a really fun run up to the final game of the year we have “Scotty Doesn’t Know” from Eurotrip and “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile going head to head. I think most people could have at least seen this as a possible final match-up of the tournament. These are two unbelievably strong contenders. I cannot wait to see how this one turns out because I have no idea how I am going to vote on this one yet again.

After the Final Four, our bracket now looks like this:

(1) “Scotty Doesn’t Know” – Eurotrip vs (2) “Lose Yourself” – 8 Mile

Polls are open. Let’s get to voting and see who wins our Championship! Voting will close Wednesday April 10 at 5pm. Our champion will be announced on Thursday. Thank you all for reading and voting on these again this year. It’s something that brings me a ton of joy every year.
