March Madness: Fictional Band’s Songs– Sweet 16

Guys, this is the best seeding I have ever done. I can’t believe things are moving along the way they are. This year’s bracket is very much a battle of the blue-bloods. The second round of our tournament was basically a good mix of runaways and a few very close match-ups! By the end of Wednesday voting we ended up with three regions that saw the 1-4 seeds move on to the Sweet 16 and one that went scratch with the exception of our double seed match-up.

The Regional Semifinal round begins now and voting will end Sunday, March 31 at 5pm Central. It’s hard to believe March is already almost finished. Good luck with making up your mind on some of these. I’m for real at a complete loss at how to vote on almost all of these match-ups. (Just a note that this Sunday is Easter and we have a ton of travelling ahead of us so I’ll do my best to get the Elite 8 post up in a timely manner on Monday.)

But first — Let’s get on to the results! Remember all “scores” are percentages from voting.

Rockstar Region

(1) “Scotty Doesn’t Know” – Eurotrip vs (8) “I’m So Humble” – Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Our Rockstar Region 1 seed is just so incredibly strong. The 8 seed “I’m So Humble” may have never really had a shot here even if it is one of the most catchy fake songs ever. We all knew what was coming here. “Scotty Doesn’t Know” moves on to the Regional Semis by a final of 85-15.

(12) “School of Rock (Teacher’s Pet)” – School of Rock vs (13) “Fever Dog” – Almost Famous

Oh, our plucky little double digit match-up. I love it when this happens. 13 seed “Fever Dog” from Almost Famous made a late run to shockingly take out the Lady Gaga 4 seed “Shallow” in the first round but ran into a Jack Black buzzsaw in the 12 seed from School of Rock which moves on 81-29.

(3) “Black Sheep” – Scott Pilgrim vs The World vs (11) “Sugar High” – Empire Records

This one was hard for me. Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Empire Records are two of my all-time favorite movies. And in particular, “Black Sheep” and “Sugar High” are high points. I could not bring myself to choose between these two. As voting came to a close, “Black Sheep” ran away by a final of 68-32.

(2) “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” – O Brother, Where Art Thou? vs (7) “3 Small Words” – Josie and the Pussycats

Another one that I almost could not bring myself to choose. I leaned Josie and the Pussycats but “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” is a masterpiece. At the end I threw a vote to “3 Small Words” but it was not enough as the Soggy Bottom Boys anthem moves on to the Sweet 16 by a final of 79-21.

Cartoon/Kid Region

(1) “The Climb” – Hannah Montana: The Movie vs (9) “Kyle’s Mom’s a Bitch” – South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut

This was the first true shock that we have seen. I thought our Cartoon/Kid Region 1 seed from Hannah Montana: The Movie would fly though the first 3 rounds at least. They got a hell of a punch from the 9 seed “Kyle’s Mom’s a Bitch”. With less than 24 hours to vote in the Round of 32, this one was sitting at a tie. The 1 seed was able to get the points they needed late to move on 61-39.

(4) “Nobody Like U” – Turning Red vs (5) “Hanging Tree” – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

This whole region started out with the best games of the tournament so far. The 4 seed from Turning Red and the 5 seed from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 were all tied up as late as Wednesday morning. The kids from Turning Red love making things exciting! After getting out of the first round via a tie-breaker, they won the Round of 32 match-up by ONE VOTE (!) 52-48.

(3) “I 2 I (Eye to Eye) – A Goofy Movie vs (6) “What Dreams Are Made Of” – The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Our 3 seed “I 2 I (Eye to Eye)” came within one vote of the ever elusive 100-0 win in the first round. In the Round of 32, they got more of a challenge in the Round of 32 from the 6 seed from The Lizzie McGuire Movie but ultimately moves on to the Sweet 16 by a final of 75-25.

(2) “Peaches” – The Super Mario Bros. Movie vs (7) “Sunny Side Up Summer” – The Bob’s Burgers Movie

If our first two match-ups in this region were barn-burners, the last two were pretty much the opposite. I very much enjoy the 7 seed “Sunny Side Up Summer” but it could not stand up to the power of Jack Black’s Bowser singing “Peaches”. This bad boy ended up winning 79-21.

Solo Region

(1) “That Thing You Do” – That Thing You Do vs (8) “I Cross My Heart” – Pure Country

The George Strait 8 seed in the Solo Region is one of the sweetest songs ever written. I’m glad it stayed around at least one round but the stay was short lived as 1 seed “That Thing You Do” shot out of a cannon and held on despite a late push from the 8 seed to a 61-39 victory.

(4) “I’m Just Ken” – Barbie vs (5) “Never Enough” – The Greatest Showman

I had a gut feeling about this one. 5 seed “Never Enough” is beautiful. But the 4 seed “I’m Just Ken” is really still having it’s moment. The anthem from The Greatest Showman tried it’s hardest, but it was…uhhh…never enough (sorry) as the song from Barbie moves on by a final of 60-40.

(3) “Grow Old With You” – The Wedding Singer vs (6) “Boats ‘n Hoes” – Step Brothers

If there have been a bunch of match-ups in this round that pitted two similar songs against each other, this was the absolute antithesis of that. Extra sweet 3 seed “Grow Old With You” moves on to the Region Semi-finals after taking out decidedly not sweet 6 seed “Boats ‘n Hoes” 68-32.

(2) “Lose Yourself” – 8 Mile vs (7) “Dracula’s Lament” – Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I kind of knew that my old favorite “Dracula’s Lament” was going to face a giant uphill battle against the 2 seed “Lose Yourself”. It’s just such a massive song. The opening bars are iconic. Our gritty 7 seed put up more of a fight than I anticipated, but at the end of the day, fell to Eminem by a final of 60-40.

TV Region

(1) “Little Sebastian” – Parks & Recreation vs (8) “Muffin Top” – 30 Rock

Our 8 seed “Muffin Top” put up as much of a fight as Jenna Maroney could muster but just got outclassed by the Parks & Recreation 1 seed and fell to the top TV seed 67-33.

(4) “Kill The Turkey” – Bob’s Burgers vs (5) “Peeno Noir” – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

I thought my Thanksgiving anthem was going to fall in the Round of 32 to the Titus Andromedon 5 seed from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Linda Belcher got a late push to win this match-up by two votes, 56-44.

(3) “Smelly Cat” – Friends vs (6) “Cop Cuties” – The Rookie

The 3 seed in the TV Region may take it all. “Smelly Cat” just demolished the competition as they blew out 6 seed “Cop Cuties” 89-11.

(2) “Let’s Go To the Mall” – How I Met Your Mother vs (7) “Butter on a Pop-Tart” – Family Guy

Our final match-up of the Round of 32 was a little bit better of a game but the Robin Sparkles song from How I Met Your Mother took out Peter and Quagmire’s hit “Butter on a Pop-Tart” by a final of 61-39.

That leaves our bracket looking like this:

Rockstar Region

(1) “Scotty Doesn’t Know” – Eurotrip vs (12) “School of Rock (Teacher’s Pet)” – School of Rock

(2) “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” – O Brother, Where Art Thou? vs (3) “Black Sheep” – Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Cartoon/Kid Region

(1) “The Climb” – Hannah Montana: The Movie vs (4) “Nobody Like U” – Turning Red

(2) “Peaches” – The Super Mario Bros. Movie vs (3) “I 2 I (Eye to Eye) – A Goofy Movie

Solo Region

(1) “That Thing You Do” – That Thing You Do vs (4) “I’m Just Ken” – Barbie

(2) “Lose Yourself” – 8 Mile vs (3) “Grow Old With You” – The Wedding Singer

TV Region

(1) “Little Sebastian” – Parks & Recreation vs (4) “Kill The Turkey” – Bob’s Burgers

(2) “Let’s Go To the Mall” – How I Met Your Mother vs (3) “Smelly Cat” – Friends

Alright everybody. Like I said, there are some absolutely impossible decisions to be made here. A full half of these are almost undecidable to me. Good luck. Polls are open and will close on Easter Sunday, March 31 at 5pm Central.

Let’s get to voting and see who makes the Regional Finals! See you guys on Monday with our Elite 8!
